RESTON, Va.----September is National College Savings Month and the ideal time for students and parents to invest in their future by starting to save for college. A new Sallie Mae study conducted by Gallup, How America Pays for College, found that only 9 percent of families paid for college last year using a college savings fund, such as a 529 college savings plan.

A sputtering economy, fewer college loan providers and a lackluster stock market are threatening to drain the financial resources many parents have counted on to pay for their children's college tuition.

Since their introduction in 1996, the now ubiquitous state-sponsored 529 college savings plans have been lauded again and again as one of the best tax breaks since the IRA.

There are several things children can do to help their parents trim college costs, says the College Money Guru.

"Welcome to college and what could be the best years of your life. Now, please pay us $76,970.85." Ouch! Let that sink in for a second.
